Advanced Blackwork Workshop at Hylands House

We went to Hylands House last year, and enjoyed the gardens, the stable yard and the arts and crafts units there, and the house itself, undergoing a painstaking renovation. Click here for our article on that visit.

But Hylands House also runs regular adult workshops and courses, ranging from patchwork, stumpwork, silverwork, cookery and various equine activities. Click the image for details of the current events from the Hylands House website.

I decided to take part in the three week blackwork course that was held recently, wondering if my embroidery skills were up to it! The tutor was Frances, and the classes were held inside Hylands House itself.

The course was called Advanced Blackwork,  and the ladies on the course were all expert embroiderers. I’d never done any blackwork, but Frances ws very welcoming and helpful, and I started to get the hang of it.

Compared to the work of the other ladies, my design was  simple, but I’m very pleased with the result. It’s not finished yet, but I intend to complete it and  then frame it.

It was a lovely fun  way to spend a Friday morning, and I’m sure that I’ll attend another of the courses at Hylands House – especially if it is run by Frances.
