Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend between Wednesday 13th April 2016 and Sunday 24th April 2016.
We saw the long-running show when it was in London in the mid-noughties, with Gary Wilmot as Caractacus Potts, and Wayne Sleep as The Childcatcher.
This touring performance starred Jason Manford as Caractacus Potts, Michelle Collins as Baroness Bomburst, Phill Jupitus as Baron Bomburst and Lord Scrumptious, Amy Griffiths as Truly Scrumptious, Andy Hockley as Grandpa Potts, and Martin Kemp as The Childcatcher. We saw it and enjoyed it immensely. Not as big as the London version of course, and whilst Chitty didn’t ‘fly’ over the audience, it did ‘fly’ on stage, most dramatically when Grandpa arrives in the nick of time at the end, swooping down on the stage.
The stars of the show were Michelle Collins and Phill Jupitus as the Baron and Lady Bomburst, whose performance of ‘Chu-Chi Face’ (where the Baron clearly wasn’t altogether enamoured of his wife) was extremely funny. The samba in the finale gave Michelle Collins the chance to shine, and a word must be said for Sam Harris and Scott Paige playing Boris and Goran the spies, who made the most of their parts!
