Colchester Castle
Castle Park, Colchester.
website
The largest Norman Keep in the country, almost 1,000 years old, and with a place to play in Colchester’s history dating back to Roman times, and through the Civil War. For many years now it has been the home of Colchester Museum. Set in Colchester’s award-winning Castle Park, the building was closed for renovation for 18 months, and re-opened in May 2014, and is quite splendid (we’ve been in!)
ESSEX DAYS OUT TIPS : There’s a lot to see in the museum, and the redesign means that you get an even better appreciation of the building itself. Book yourself in for a guided tour in the museum as that gets you into the vaults, the dungeons and up on the roof! And Castle Park is beautiful, with a couple of much loved playgrounds for the little ones!
