Summer holiday activities for children in Essex

A number of destinations across Essex have special activities during the summer. Here are our picks :

If you want a break from the sun, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Essex Libraries is Mischief Makers, run in conjunction with The Beano comic.

Jurassic Discovery at RHS Hyde Hall has a dino theme, with special events throughout the summer.

Professor Nitrate’s Summer of Science at Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey sees Professor Nitrate and team bring out even bigger and better experiments during their Summer of Science.

Continuing the science theme, the Museum of Power Kid’s Summer Fun Science (Educational Science and Art) has Wednesday workshops facilitated by magical duo Darren & Dean.” Combine a trip there to nearby Promenade Park in Maldon.

And Summer of Science a Sanford Mill has morning and afternoon sessions on Fridays during the summer “where kids will be filled with wonder when they take part in fun experiments and discover why a balloon doesn’t explode with a giant needle in it, and how to make a toilet roll fly!”

Rainham Marshes Nature Reserve have a wide range of events on over the summer, from pond dipping, to late night moth nights.

Firstsite in Colchester is offering MAKE, an opportunity to sculpt, draw and build a range of artworks based on the current exhibitions at Firstsite.

Perrywood Garden Centre Summer Activities allow your younger children to “explore nature through a range of activities at our Garden Explorers sessions. Activities range from pond dipping and scavenger hunts through to getting creative with nature in art workshops.”

The Summer Festival at Audley End Miniature Railway includes a “Train Ride, Fairy and Elf Walk, Craft Making, Face Painting, Games Area, Story Telling and our Fancy Dress Parade”

Audley End have their regular summer week-long special activities : Victorians’ Worst Jobs, Knights and Princesses, Ugly Bug Safari, Fairy Finders, Train the Troops, Spy School.

Barleylands have a call out : Animals Lovers Wanted. “Each week, throughout the summer, we will be unveiling an amazing selection of animal encounters and craft activities, meaning it’s worth coming weekly just to make sure you don’t miss out on all the wholesome family fun on offer.”
