We have a couple of country houses in Essex, and they do cater for the youngsters during the summer. And, let’s be honest, being dragged around a country house as a child is an important character-building exercise which will help them in later life.
We love Audley End – it’s got plenty there for adults, but also enough to keep children entertained, especially if you go on one of their big event days. Our article on their Charge of the Queen’s Cavalry has a video to give you an idea of what can be on offer. Otherwise, check out their themed weeks for children this summer. There’s also the Audley End Miniature Railway just outside. And it’s a quick drive to Saffron Walden for some retail therapy after the visit.
Hylands House near Chelmsford isn’t the biggest house, but it’s lovely inside. And the grounds are enormous – take a picnic and wander around, and check out the stable yard with its horses and its cafe.
