Just a short word of appreciation for my favourite pub in Colchester – The Bricklayers, at the bottom of Bergholt Road, 5 minutes walk (if that) from Colchester North railway station. Less than 10 minutes drive from us, but hidden away off the beaten track, The Plough at Peldon lived up to the recommendation of a friend. You’ll only drive past the pub if you’re on the back road from the Maldon heading towards Mersea Island, and it appears we’ve been missing at least ten years [...] This evening we decided it was time to go back to The Peldon Rose, on Mersea Road, a few miles out of Colchester and close to Mersea Island. We hadn’t been there since about 1987, and as it is only about 5 miles up the road, long overdue. Being a milestone birthday today, we decided to head off to The Compasses at Pattiswick, which is off the A120 to the west of Colchester – about 10 minutes from the A12 at Marks Tey. Even further afield at the moment! Reporting live from The Wellhouse, Exeter, at a table overlooking Exeter Cathedral, sipping a pint of Headstrong from the Blackawton Brewery which is based in the Tamar valley at Saltash (website : http://www.blackawtonbrewery.co.uk).
