The Hurdlemakers Arms, Woodham Mortimer
Posted on 25 June 2011 by Mark Watson
The Hurdlemakers Arms in Woodham Mortimer is tucked away on Post Office Road, off the A414 just south of Maldon. It’s worth seeking out!
The reason for our being there was they were running a beer festival, and there’s not many beer festivals that can boast such a charming setting. The pub is an old one, and is lovely in itself, but the beer festival was in their ‘Mortimer’s Barn’ a quaint, beamed barn – it’s not huge, but just right for a couple of dozen barrels of beer and seating for several people.
They had a couple of dozen beers on offer, and several ciders. The beers included a lot of local ales, and some from farther afield. And I was pleased to have a couple of dark beers to drink – Wibblers’ Very Dark Mild, a new one to me, and Nethergate Umbel Magna, their coriander flavoured beer.
We had lunch there, with their gammon, eggs and chips (and salad) being generous and just right. The pub had lots of seating for food, and I was taken by the lovely framed collection of 1960s/1970s beer mats on one wall. I was also taken by the selection of real ales at the bar, and the pump clips for those recently on offer and those about to be offered – an excellent range.
So, that’s another really good pub added to our Essex Real Ale map, and one we’ll be seeking out again. Pictures below…
