The Plough at Peldon.

Less than 10 minutes drive from us, but hidden away off the beaten track, The Plough at Peldon lived up to the recommendation of a friend.  You’ll only drive past the pub if you’re on the back road from the Maldon heading towards Mersea Island, and it appears we’ve been missing at least ten years worth of high quality cooking.

It doesn’t have the biggest menu, all options across three courses easily fitting onto three blackboards across a fire!

There’s a bias towards sea food, which is fine by us, but there is steak and the likes of lamb, and slow roasted gammon hock if you fancy meat. We started with devilled whitebait, dressed crab, breaded king prawns with a chilli dip, and duck spring rolls with a dip. The food was excellent, and the presentation top quality.

For mains we had dressed crab, scampi, and steamed bass on linguini. Again, presentation was excellent, and I can recommend the bass.

Two of us fancied a dessert, and the strawberry creme brulee, and the chocolate cheesecake were presented to an even higher standard, and were equally delicious.

Excellent value at about £7 per starter and £12 per main. You’ll find cheaper pub food quite easily, but you won’t find pub food as delicious and as well presented quite so easily. You will find The Plough at Lower Road Peldon, Colchester, Essex CO5 7QR  (tel : 01206 735 808), halfway between Colchester and Mersea Island, it’s worth seeking out! The only minor quibble is that the only beer on that evening was IPA – me being a bit of a real ale afficionado, I’d like to see a couple more beers on tap!

I have been eating at the Plough for many years and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and the varied menu. Last night we enjoyed a sample of smoked raindeer heart which was very tasty. My labrador Chuckles hopes to be able to come home from the vet tomorrow. The chef can sometimes be difficult when it comes to gluten free and allergy related dishes. I did once ask for a gluten free dish, I’m hoping that i will be able to ride my bicycle again in the not too distant future.

The chef is always ready to listen to new ideas and menu suggestions, so never feel afraid to make requests, these will always be greeted with a cheery smile and a polite thanks.
