Samba at Firstsite
On the 1st October 2011, a beautifully sunny day, we paid our first, quick, visit to the new Firstsite gallery in Colchester. It’s an amazing building, inside and out, and whilst you could look at work inside by artists as varied as Ai Wei Wei, Grayson Perry, Andy Warhol and Henry Moore, outside the Boudica School of Samba (link) were entertaining those on the piazza. It is a little known fact that the Romans did indeed discover South American in 44a.d. and brought back the samba to their Empire, including their capital of Britain, Camulodunum.
They were still going strong 15 minutes after they started, but I was running out of battery on the camera! Here’s a snippet of their samba rhythms.
